A trek full of adventure ideal for confirmed hikers in an extremely varied terrain, from dense forests to semi-arid savannas, the Loita Hills on the Nguruman escarpment to the Magadi valley on the South West of Kenya. An incursion on foot, guided by the Maasai tribesmen to the real heart of their lands. It offers an awesome opportunity to encounter one of the most enigmatic people on the face of the planet. The Nguruman escarpment rises from the floor of the Great Rift Valley (600 m altitude) to a plateau of around 1200 m altitude and thereafter to rocky hills covered by primary forests culminating at more than 2,400 meters altitude.

Programme and Itinerary

Day 1: NAIROBI –LOITA HILLS
(8 hours’ drive)

Meet & Greet in the morning hours at the airport and depart on a road and trails that pass through villages and grandiose landscapes of the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive and set up camp at Entesekra (2000 meters above sea level) at the edge of the Nguruman escarpment and Loita hills, overlooking Lake Magadi and Lake Natron stretching to the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Preparation for the trek with the team: an English-speaking guide, a Maasai guide and a cook. Dinner around a campfire and night spent in a tent.

Day 2: LOITA FOREST – OLASORU WATERFALLS
(5 hours hike minimum –climbing a difference of 300 meters in altitude)

After breakfast, depart on foot through a primary forest in the company of guides and camping equipment transported on the back of donkeys. A forest trail climbs the escarpment through clearings and water points frequented by forest animals; Elephants, buffaloes and antelopes. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the way. Arrival mid-afternoon at the Olasoru site (2300 m), a spectacular waterfall. Set up camp near the site in middle of the forest. Dinner and overnight spent in a tent.

Day 3: LOITA FOREST
(5 hours walk at minimum- descending a difference of 300 meters drop)

Gradual descent from the escarpment on off road paths, climbing and descending with some rocky passages. Stop at a stunning viewpoint overlooking the Great Rift Valley; Lake Magadi and Lake Natron stretch to the horizon with the Shompole volcano and Ol Donyio Lengai volcanic mountain in the background. Arrive mid-afternoon to set up camp. Overnight spent in a tent at 1800 m.

Day 4: LOITA FOREST- NGURUMAN ESCARPMENT
(5 hours walk – descending 400 meters altitude drop

The descent continues and you begin leaving the forest to reach the plateau of the Nguruman escarpment featuring a radical change of environment and climate; the freshness of the forest gives way to a semi-arid wooded savannah under high heat in daytime. Encounter Maasai villages again. From now henceforth, you will take the migratory tracks of the Maasai cattle, linking the valley with the fertile highlands. Set up camp at 1400 m altitude. Night spent in a tent.

Day 5: NGURUMAN ESCARPMENT- SHOMPOLE RESERVE
(3 hours walk and descending 800 meters altitude drop)

A final descent from the escarpment arriving at Nguruman village, a haven of freshness in a lush tropical vegetation comprised of tamarind trees, fig trees, banana trees, pawpaw trees and mango trees. Transfer on a road along the escarpment, arriving at Loisijo Lodge, a bungalow hut camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river (brown river in Maasai language) managed by the local community Maasai. Dinner and overnight at the end of the world.

Day 6: SHOMPOLE

This day is dedicated to a visit of the Shompole reserve by vehicle all the way to the Shompole volcano and Lake Natron on the Tanzanian border. Search for wildlife: elephants, zebras, giraffes, antelopes and lions which are very rare... Accommodation at Loisijo Lodge.

Day 7: SHOMPOLE- NAIROBI (5 hours’ drive)

After breakfast, depart for a visit of the shores of Lake Magadi where hundreds of pelicans and flamingos flock. Pass by the Olergasailie site, a mineral landscape dating back several million years where the origins of man were nestled, remains of hominids and prehistoric animals were excavated here. Arrive in Nairobi at the end of the afternoon and transfer to Nairobi Airport for the return flight.

N.B. The tents set up in the forest during the treks are of basic nature, an area for a pit latrine and the shower is covered by a tarpaulin, camping material and equipment, water and food are transported by donkeys.
