This circuit gives you the opportunity to experience a fascinating encounter with forgotten Maasai Villages in the Kenyan south in a terrain only accessible by small paths, all the while learning Maasai natural philosophy and way of life . You will trace the origins of mankind and follow after the footsteps of an African ethnic ancestry.

Programme and Itinerary

Day 1: NAIROBI-MOUNT SUSWA
(3 hours’ drive)

Meet & Greet at Nairobi International Airport in the morning hours and depart heading to Ngong Hills. Plunge into the Maasai country of Kedong by a steep trail in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. Without wait, encounter the first wild animals; baboons, giraffes, gazelles, ostriches, zebras ... Arrive in time to enjoy a picnic lunch and set up camp at Mount Suswa. Visit Suswa caves in the afternoon, penetrating the petrified lava flows of the ancient volcano. Return to the camp for dinner around a campfire and then retire to spend the night in a tent. It is not uncommon to hear hyenas at night, passing a few hundred meters from the camp.

Day 2: MOUNT SUSWA TREK -MAASAI MOSIRO COUNTRY
(4 hours’ trek and 3 hours’ drive)

Wake up and enjoy breakfast at the break of day. At sunrise, it is possible to see jets of vapour emanating from the ground, hot water springs are also present, testifying to an ever present volcanic activity in the ground. Depart for 4 hours’ trek on about 450 meters elevation leading to the rim of an old volcano (Ol Doinyo Nyukie "the Red Mountain") climaxing at 2320 meters, offering striking views of the valley of the Great Rift Valley, enjoy a picnic lunch then board the vehicle and head in the direction of Maasai Mosiro country. Arrive at Mosiro Maasai Village at the end of the afternoon. You are welcomed by the local population then are headed in direction of Ewaso Nyiro River at the foot of Nguruman escarpment to set up the camp. Enjoy a traditional barbecue in the evening around a campfire in the company of the Masai warriors who sing about their adventures with wild animals. Overnight spent in a tent.

Day 3:  MOSIRO - Day dedicated to discovery and interaction with Maasai culture

A day dedicated to the discovery of Maasai culture, a visit of the surrounding villages, a market where trade in cattle and livestock is organized, a primary school in the bush. Visit the traditional dwellings ... learn to recognize the medicinal flora, exchange local greetings, learn the daily Maasai way of life, understand their customs ... Camping on the banks of the River Ewaso Nyiro.

Day 4: TREK ALONG EWASO NYIRO RIVER- MOSIRO
(4 hours’ walk)

Depart after breakfast and before the sun is too high for a 4 hour trek on about 15 km following the footsteps of the Maasai warriors along the Ewaso Nyiro river which flows at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and borders a burning hot savanna. Some antelopes scatter as you pass through, then walk past the Maasai pastoralists leading their huge herds from pasture to a single watering point on migratory tracks leading from the semi-arid valley to the fertile highlands. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of an acacia tree when the high temperature forces you to stop in order to recover. Return by 4x4 vehicle to the camp by the river, enjoy dinner in company of the Maasai and thereafter spend the night in a tent under the African starry sky.

Day 5: MOSIRO- OLORGASAILIE PREHISTORIC SITE
(5 hours’ drive)

Break camp and depart in 4x4 on trails of black lava stones lined with thorny trees. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive in early afternoon at the prehistoric site of Olorgasailie where the origins of the man were nestled. Spend the night in a hut bungalow facing a mineral landscape dating back several million years.

Day 6: OLORGASAILIE - NAIROBI
(3 hours’ drive)

Morning visit on foot to prehistoric sites where remains of hominids and prehistoric animals were excavated, return to the hut bungalow for lunch. Depart in the afternoon for a return by road skirting the Ngong hills thereafter arriving in Nairobi. Transfer to the airport for the return flight.
