6 days Trek NORTH TANZANIANgorongoro Crater and Lake Natron departing from Arusha

Day 1: Arusha - Ngorongoro
(3 hours’ drive)

Depart from Arusha in the morning for Ngorongoro Crater. The road crosses the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley and ascends the high Ngorongoro plateau, ascending by the trail on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater through a primary forest up to a marvelous panoramic point of view overlooking the 600 meter deep caldera of over 18 Km in diameter. The track then descends to the floor of the crater where almost all of African wildlife is gathered.  Enjoy a picnic lunch and drive up the crater in the late evening. Arrive near the Maasai village of Nainokanoka (2700 meters of altitude) to set up the camp. Spend the evening and night in company of the Maasai.

Day 2: Nainokanoka - Empakaai Crater
(About 6 ½ hours walk)

Depart after breakfast for a trek guided by the Maasai, their donkeys follow behind, transporting luggage and camping equipment to head for the Empakaai crater. Arrive on the rim of the crater covered with a primary forest , this point offers plunging views of the Great Rift Valley and the Ol Donyo Lengai volcanic mountain The crater is 300 m deep by 6 km in diameter and is covered on almost half its surface area by a very deep alkaline lake . Set up camp on the rim of the crater (2500 meters of altitude).  Dinner and overnight spent in a tent.

Day 3: Empakaai Crater - Acacia Camp
(About 5 ½ hours walk)

Descend after breakfast to the Empakaai crater by a steep path, walk along the shores of a lake inhabited by flamingos. Go up to the rim of the crater to continue the trek and climb down the escarpment heading towards the Great Rift Valley , all the while overlooking splendid landscapes with the Ol Donyo Lengai volcano and Mount Meru in the background. Arrive at Acacia Camp and set up camp at 1800 meters of altitude.

Dinner in the company of the Maasai and overnight spent in a tent.

Day 4: Acacia Camp- Lac Natron
(About 5 ½ hours walk)

Final descent of the Great Rift Valley escarpment up to Lake Natron. Enjoy a picnic lunch under the shade of an acacia tree, Lake Natron can now be perceived on the horizon as you approach. The temperature gradually increases on the trail descending to the foot of the Ol Donyio Lengai volcano (Mount Masai 2878 m, considered sacred by the Maasai) whose slopes are covered with soda ash and lava that give the terrain a lunar aspect. Arrive in the afternoon and set up camp at a campsite that overlooks Lake Natron at 700 meters of altitude. Dinner and overnight under the starry African sky.

Day 5: Ascension of the volcano and Lake Natron.

The 4WD vehicle will drive you all the way to the foot of the Ol Donyo Lengai volcano shortly after midnight to begin the ascent and reach the summit at sunrise (elevation of 1300 meters!).  The vehicle takes you back to the campsite after you have gone downhill to have breakfast .Refresh yourself at the Ngare Sero waterfalls flowing from the Great Rift Valley Escarpment.  Rest at the camp in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight under a tent at the Lake Natron campsite.

Day 6: LAKE NATRON - ARUSHA
(6 hours’ drive)

Set out on foot to the shores of Lake Natron where thousands of flamingos and hundreds of pelicans are gathered. The lake has a high concentration of alkaline salts which has led to the development of a microscopic alga essential for the survival and reproduction of flamingos. Giraffes and other animals can also be seen. Depart with a picnic lunch for Arusha. Return by the end of the afternoon.
